Hey Readers!
Check out this fantastic video on teaching Media Literacy in the classroom:
Edutopia. (July 13, 2005). Media Smarts:Kids learn how to navigate the multimedia world. Retrieved from: https://www.edutopia.org/media-literacy-skills-video
As 21st
century learners and educators we need to incorporate different forms of media in our classrooms. I believe that
physical education, the arts, and technology are just as important to teach
as math and literacy! In the video Media Smarts: Kids learn how to navigate the
multimedia world, they discuss how to teach communication. This is a life skill
that can be used in everyday situations in life. Teaching media literacy can be
a great option to teach communication as it hits many skills, and teaches them
in many new ways other than just reading and writing. It is important to understand
stories, and how the language is taught towards them. Students can create
videos (young stories, older biographies) and learn more language and literacy
then if they were typing a story or writing one on paper. They can apply to
real life values and topics. We want to teach kids how to speak for themselves,
think outside the box, and relate to the world around them. In my technology
class we are using pictures to tell stories which you can see I created one about an Adventure I went on, on my blog post: my digital story. We all know the saying: a picture tells a thousand
words; teachers can use this instead of writing it all down on a slide show
presentation. I want to teach students the language of media and help them be
well round individuals as well as lifelong learners. How I teach my students and create a change in
education is up to me and I hope I can make a difference as a future teacher!
With the rise of new technologies education can’t be left behind by not
teaching what is happening in the world, we as future educators can teach
students what they need to understand, address, and how these cultural
apparatuses work to diffuse their learning critically. “Media literacy will
make the difference between whether kids are a tool of the media or whether the
media is a tool for kids to use!” Linda Ellerbee. I love this quote because it
shows the impact and difference that media literacy can be for our future
students.
