The name of the Tree
Check out this reading of the book: The name of the tree, by Kathleen Pelley. This is a great book to read in a classroom as it teaches students how to remember the name of the tree. This can help students learn other items, as the amount of times you say it and repeat it to yourself the more likely you are to remember it. It doesn't matter how young, slow, or different any person is this task can be completed by them, just like the tortoise. Another great way to remember the name of the tree is singing the words to remember them. This reminds me of an Arthur episode where Arthur was trying to spell A-R-D-V-A-R-K. Arthur made a song into how the word was spelt so he could remember it, just like the Tortoise does in this story. This is a great tool to use as it can be using the hard copy of the book or having the students listen to the story on this video, which incorporates technology into their learning. This connects to both media literacy, and reading in the language arts curriculum.
